Federica Schiavo Gallery

Pascal Hachem was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1979, where he currently lives and works.

He studied in Lebanon from 1997 to 2002 and during this time he manifested his propensity as an artist by embarking upon a series of ‘actions’ or installations in Beirut. Given the volatile social and political situation in Beirut, he felt the need to venture beyond the shelter of university and confront the reality of the city in its public realm. These actions have caught the attention of international press as well as bringing together local communities.

Hachem is inspired by aspects of everyday life in the Beirut, which often contextualise his way of thinking in such an unconscious way that his work cannot escape the influence of its environment. He does not impose a set of rules upon himself, but rather is prompted by nothing but a single impressionable moment, to produce. As a result, he has built a collection of work using various mediums, including his own body as well as elements and forms of everyday life.

In 2012 Hachem was awarded The Boghossian Prize, section sculpture and installation, by the Boghossian Foundation, Brussels. His first monograph was published in 2012 entitled Pascal Hachem and distributed by Idea Book, the Netherlands.

More recently, Hachem’s work has been exhibited internationally at the following institutions and galleries: The Mosaic Rooms, London; Soulangh Cultural Park, Tainan, Taiwan; Federica Schiavo Gallery, Italy; Cestia Pyramid, Rome, Italy; Selma Feriani Gallery, London and Tunisia; Casa Arabe, Madrid, Spain; Gwangju Museum of Art, Gwangju, South Korea; dak’art biennale, Dakar, Senegal; Fondazione Merz, Turin, Italy; The International Istanbul Theatre Festival, Istanbul, Turkey.

Selected artist talks include the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (2017), The Mosaic Rooms in London - moderated by Asad Raza (2017), City Gallery Wellington in New Zealand (2016) and Art Basel Talks in Switzerland (2014).
